The Ace of Spades, commonly referred to as the Death Card was originally a symbol for good luck. That changed during the Vietnam War. During the war in South East Asia, the Ace of Spades became a popular Psy Ops tool. Initially a soldier would place the Ace of Spades from his deck of cards on his first kill. Over time units began purchasing cards with unit insignias to use as a warning to Viet Cong and NVA. Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment took this practice to a whole new level by purchasing whole crates full of 1 card, the Ace of Spades. Till this day Cavalry Scout Platoons still leave custom cards reminding other units their perimeter had been breached.
