3rd Armored Division, nicknamed "Spearhead"but unofficially nicknamed "Third Herd". First activated on April 15, 1941 this division served in the European theater during WWII. The unit received their official nickname "Spearhead" by spearheading the US First Army through Normandy. The division fought at one of the nastiest battles of the war "Hurtgen Forest" and also at the Battle of the Bulge. During the Cold War the division was stationed in West Germany as a deterrent to the Soviet Union. The last war the 3rd AD participated in was the Persian Gulf War. The unit was officially deactivated on 17th of January 1992.
